He closed the door and sat on the bed. Hard.

He could hear muffled laughter, shouts of recognition. Parents crying goodbyes. Parties already underway.

He sat in silence, in emptiness, his duffel clasped over his knees.

Every constant in his life had been left behind, and though he’d planned for it – fought for it – the reality was overwhelming.

He’d done a lot of things, but alone was not one of them. 

Panic clawed its way up his throat, but he swallowed it. Pushed it down.

You wanted this, he reminded himself forcefully.

He unzipped his bag and started to unpack.
